Randomness from a Friday Afternoon

I have about 20 minutes to kill before heading out to go to practice, so i though i would add a bit on random happenings.

I just finished my second week of class, and even though i am only taking two classes, i am as bad a procrastinator as i was in under grad (although i'm not entirely sure why i thought that would change just because i changed schools). My Book Pub class, is a little dry right now, but i think i am really going to get a feel for the industry (which is the point). Also, i am really excited to getting working on my manuscript...as part of the class, everyone got an actual manuscript that was published (although we have the version that was submitted, not the polished version), and over the course of the term, we are going to go through all the steps of publishing the manuscript. Mine is a novel called Russian Requiem. It looks really interesting and the writing is right up my alley (really liquidy, and almost poetic). However, as i'm not so much up on my modern Russian history, Ian, you may be getting a few confused emails from me.

My other class is a copyediting class which is actually a lot of fun (showing the true depth of my geekiness). The whole four hours is basically the whole class editing a piece on our own, and then coming together to argue about why the way we edited is the best. Kate, think all the conversations you and I had about words and you have the tenor of the class (oh, and i adore my professor...she is laid back, quick to laugh, but also really knowledgable...oh, and Topher Grace's mom on "That Seventies Show," she has that laugh...its great!).

Work is work...although i am finally feeling like i know what i'm supposed to be doing so it is much less stressful. My girls had their first game this week, and sadly they lost 4-1, but unlike the score, the game was incredibly close and gave me hope that we are going to have a really good season. Also, it was so fun for me to see how excited all the girls were to play.

On a really random note, i watched the pilot of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, and i'm excited. The show feels like Sorkin took the best of Sports Night and the West Wing, and smushed them together. At least from the first show, the casting seems perfect, and i'm interested to see how the show will progress. If you missed the pilot i highly suggest tuning in next week.

And as it is about time for me to take off, i promise more randomness later.

Michigan Wolverines in Boston

Today I went into town to go shopping with my roommates, and who should walk on the train but a girl sporting a Michigan t-shirt. I was about to ask her if she'd gone to Michigan and if she were excited for the game today (seriously needing someone to bash the fighting Irish with), but then she opened her mouth to talk to her friend and i decided against.

BUT, it is amazing how many people have stopped me to ask if i went to Michigan. I use the bag the alumni association gave out this year quite often (which says in big yellow letters "I Am Michigan" so it explains why people come up to me, but it is nice to meet alumns, or in several cases, UofM admirers. While no one I am in class with has ever really heard of Michigan, people on the street have (and...Michigan has its own alumni bar in the city, which i will definitely visit sometime).

So on this glorious day, after our boys brillant victory:

GO BLUE...HAIL TO THE VICTORS!

Jobs and Try-outs

The last week has been very busy. On top of going to orientation, meeting the people in my program, debating between buying books before or after the start of class, and getting through another week on my own in a strange city, i also finally got my job situation all settled. I was two for two on job interviews, so I am now a proud member of the Emerson mailroom team and an office assistant in the office of Career Services.

The mailroom job will be a typical no brainer, but it will force me to become familiar with the whereabouts of all departments on campus (a very useful thing!). The Career Services job will be a typical office job, but i might also get the chance to do some event planning (putting my irish dance producer skills to work...i'm very excited). Both jobs however, are in what seem to be very nice office with great people, so all in all I think i will be happy (and my roommates can rest assured that i will be able to pay rent).

The career services job offered an extra perk, on top of being a god send of a good paying job: the woman i interviewed with was very excited to hear that i was an irish step dancer, and informed me that she could hook me up with the correct contacts so as to get in touch with the three different troupes in the city. It was really funny, during the interview, we actually went on a rift about irish dancing, and then both had to bring attention back to the matter at hand. Apparently, all irish dancers have irish dance add in common.

So now i have my three different jobs, the latest two starting this week. The coaching job, however, started last week, and tryouts were absolutely crazy. 53 girls came out for two teams. 53! Sadly, that meant we had to make cuts. It was one of the hardest things i've ever been a part of, because every girl who came out worked really hard. What needed to be done was done though, and official practice starts next week. I am excited for the start of the season.

And that is what i've been up to recently. As always, i miss you all.
